The Key to Longevity
This year, for my birthday, I gave myself a gift. It may seem small as far as gifts go. After all, it was a dance class that only costs $20.00. But it has more of an effect on me than anything else money can buy.
Because of my own teaching schedule, I haven’t had time to take classes. As a result, it’s been a number of years since I’ve been able to dance, dance, which in of itself is not such a big a deal, since I’ve at least been able to get into classes intermittently. The issue now is that I’m 50. This time, I was afraid to go back and discover I was too old to dance, a fear I’ve been carrying around with me for years. Now, I don’t mean dance as in take a class and move around with the music. My fear was more that I would reach the age when my body wouldn’t move the way I wanted it to, to feel the way I wanted it to. That, plus the multiple surgeries I’ve had, have only fanned the flame.
Fortunately, the one thing I have done religiously is stretch. Granted, my jumps, kicks and turns aren't the same, but during the ballet class, moving was. It felt so good, I grew goosebumps. Suddenly, I was on the receiving end of my own advice, appreciating how flexibility really does enable you to enjoy doing the things you love to do. So, if you want to "dance" or do whatever, forever, keep stretching! Moving really is the key to longevity.
